Understanding Community & Culture for Impactful Fundraising and Donor Relations

Join us at Hillcrest in Lincoln on Tuesday, May 19th at 9:00 AM (breakfast + check-in at 8:30)

About The Program

Understanding Community & Culture for Impactful Fundraising and Donor Relations is a practical, high-energy session on how cultural fluency becomes a competitive advantage in fundraising. Dr. Lawrence Chatters will share a clear framework and “use-tomorrow” tools to help professionals deepen donor trust, strengthen stewardship, and avoid costly missteps that happen when we lead with assumptions instead of context. Expect actionable discovery questions, a fast self-audit you can apply to a real donor relationship, and a memorable Nebraska Athletics leadership lens on why fundraising is truly a team sport.

About Our Speaker

Dr. Lawrence Chatters is the Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives & Capacity at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), where he leads national work to strengthen institutional capacity, deepen philanthropic partnerships, and translate community needs into funder-ready strategy and measurable impact. With a background in counseling psychology and community partnership leadership—including service in the Office of the Chancellor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln—he specializes in the “human side” of fundraising: trust-building, cultural fluency, and relationship-centered stewardship.
Dr. Chatters also brings high-level athletics leadership experience as a former Executive Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Initiatives in Nebraska Athletics, where he operated in a results-driven environment centered on relationships, performance, and stakeholder confidence. Across higher education, athletics, and philanthropy, his work focuses on helping organizations build durable donor relationships by understanding the communities they serve and the cultural contexts that shape giving, loyalty, and long-term investment.
